I have now arrived in Samarkand which is every bit as stunning as the pictures suggest (google images of it to see what I mean). There are several other travellers here- including a Swiss woman solo cycling to Japan, in this heat I look at her and think " I am so glad I have got an engine to help me".
There is also a German couple on GS motorbikes whom I am going to meet up with later- their bikes are a lot less battered than Thelma.
Still recovering from the desert crossing- I had to get out my sewing kit when I arrived here and put a few stitches into the waistband on my trousers as they are falling down - not a pretty sight I can assure you (and that's not just my sewing I am talking about). Also not very acceptable in a Muslim country though I have yet to hear the call of the muzzein.
The camels of the desert have been replaced by donkeys who are wandering around the road when they are not attached to heavily laden carts.
I am just 200 miles I think from Tashkent - and I will be meeting Ann's flight there tomorrow night and she will be joining me until Mongolia. I think this has turned out to be pretty good timimg - synchronsing our arrival like this.
