A Great Horizons Unlimited Meeting
Submitted by Tiffany on 28 June, 2010 - 21:32
I was invited to give my Mongolian Mayhem presentation at the Horizons Unlimited meeting this weekend at Ripley in Derbyshire and what a weekend it was. More than 600 motorcycle travellers descended on the event from all over the world. I borrowed Ethel (maggie's bike) for the ride up, after all I couldn't arrive at such a classic event by train could I?
I have no panniers for that bike so I packed light and inexpertly shoved everything into my kayak dry bags and piled them on the seat behind me. It was an eight hour ride to Ripley- getting in some long distance practice ready for next week though I would have preferred to arrive without the numb bum.
A fantastic weekend with hot sun the whole time, I gave my talk and followed this up with a self defence for travellers workshop which was good fun and then a "How to Pick Up Your Bike" demonstration and workshop. I think Thelma must be the most dropped bike in the world of bike travellers, so I feel I have quite a store of advice on this subject! We had fun and I must say a thank you to Reg for lending his bike for the workshop and also the un-named guy who patiently (and gently) lay the bike back down each time.
As well as catching up with friends from all over the country and the world, Maggie (Ireland), Tobi (Germany) and Kosta (Bulgaria) amongst them, these three have all travelled with meon different continents. I listened to quite a few other travel presentations, I heckled Walter Colebatch only a bit during his talk on Siberia and took part in a yoga for bikers session - Tori you are a star. www,yogaforbikers.co.uk
I finally managed to meet Peter and Kay Forwood, who have been to 193 countries on their Harley Davidson, over the years we had narrowly missed each other in obscure locations so it was great to finally catch up with them. The roadkill cookout is always a sociable occasion and even for us veggies, Danny and his wife had prepared nettle soup and elderflower champagne.
My next Horizons Unlimited meeting is going to be in North America sometime next month.
